Weave like a jellyfish….

Jack Johnson has a famous song with the lyrics “When you move like a jellyfish, rhythm don’t mean nothing. You go with the flow. You don’t stop.” I love that line, and for a while I claimed it as a motto. That was quite a while ago – long before I owned a loom, or even dreamed I would ever be a weaver.

These lyrics came back to mind recently when I received a study group assignment this year. I just joined the study group, and I was really looking forward to getting to know a new circle of weavers. The group assigned 4 traits to each weaver, and the assignment is to make something using these 4 assignments. To allow some flexibility, the rules allow you to substitute one of the qualities with something different, but only one. My assigned traits: black, split-complementary color scheme , waffle weave, and a favorite place.

Right off the bat, I had questions. What is a split-complementary color theme for black? Hmm, don’t know. But I was excited – I’ve been wanting to make some waffle weave towels, so this could be the reason for me to get it on the loom. But, this is a four-harness study group. I wanted to do a deeper waffle for my towels…. Maybe that’s the element I will swap out?

Favorite place? That was a quick decision for me. I grew up near a dam on the Thornapple River, and I have many happy memories around that dam. I was able to find photographs of the dam from the bridge that I crossed over every day. River, waterfall – sounds like a wall hanging to me!I’m not sure how I’ll go about this yet, but I am taking Jack’s advice. I’m going to weave like a jellyfish. I’ll go wherever this river takes me.
